Kappa Ularthiyathu | Kerala Style Tapioca Fry

Kappa Ularthiyathu

Quick and easy Kerala style tapioca fry ,usually served with fish curry or any other spicy gravy.
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook time: 20 minutes
Serves: 2 people
Ingredients:

  1. Tapioca (Kappa),cleaned and cubed-2 cups
  2. Mustard seeds-1/4 tsp
  3. Green chilies,cut vertically-2 nos
  4. Shallots,sliced-2 tbsp
  5. Curry leaves- 1 or 2 sprigs
  6. Dry red chilies,cut into two -2 to 3 nos
  7. Turmeric powder-1/4 tsp
  8. Grated coconut-2 tbsp
  9. Hot water -1 tbsp(if required)
  10. Salt-to taste
  11. Water-to cook tapioca
  12. Oil-as required

Instructions:

  • In a large pan, add tapioca,water and salt to taste.Cook until it is soft.

  • Heat oil in a pan,add mustard seeds and let it splutter.Add green chilies,shallots( i used onion),curry leaves and red chilies.saute until it turns golden brown.
  • Add turmeric powder and saute for few seconds.

  • Now add grated coconut and mix well.Add the cooked tapioca and mix well until combined.Add more salt ,if required.Mash it gently,if desired.( If you feel it is a bit dry,add 1 or 2 tbsp of hot water and mix well).

  • Cook for one more minute.
  • This can be served with:

    or any other spicy gravy.

    I didnt even know that you get Tapioca like that !! How silly of me !

    Never tasted this, hmm.. will have to find some store you keep the fresh roots.. good recipe !
